Autopsy: Markquett Martin died of self-inflicted gunshot running from police

View Comments An autopsy, conducted Feb. 11 by Davidson County Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Thomas Deering, shows Markquett Martin s cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the right side of his head. Deering wrote in his report Martin was struck once while carrying a handgun with a very large magazine while fleeing Metro Nashville Police Department officers. He was 21. The shooting took place 1:50 p.m. Feb. 10 in the 800 block of Claiborne Street in J.C. Napier Homes just outside downtown. Based on all the information given, it is my opinion that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted and not a homicide, Deering wrote in his 13-page report. The autopsy findings also do not clarify between accident and suicide.

Critics assail restructured Nashville budget ahead of final vote

View Comments Nashville Mayor John Cooper s proposed budget for the fiscal year starting July 1 aims to tackle growth challenges with the largest boost in spending in more than a decade.  It sailed smoothly through most Metro Council committee meetings in May, buoyed by raises for teachers and Metro employees, increased policing and dozens more staff members to plan development, affordable housing, transportation and even tree management.  A 34% tax increase approved last year will refill nearly empty savings accounts, and heavy debt loads were refinanced to capture savings.  City finance officials say the restructured spending plan stabilizes an increasingly faulty budget starved of tax increases for too many years.

Report Finds Deficiencies in MNPD s Response to Warnings About Christmas Bomber

Report Finds Deficiencies in MNPD s Response to Warnings About Christmas Bomber Despite the police department s assertions, a review panel found no record of bomb squad officer pursuing initial tip Tweet Anthony Warner s Antioch homePhoto: Matt Masters The Metro Nashville Police Department s investigation into warnings in 2019 that Christmas Day bomber Anthony Warner was building bombs at his home was insufficient, according to a report released Wednesday by the department.  Warner detonated a bomb in an RV on downtown Nashville s Second Avenue on Christmas morning, killing himself and damaging dozens of buildings up and down the street. A warning blaring from the RV before the explosion alerted residents and allowed police officers to evacuate the area. No one else was killed in the explosion. Warner was apparently obsessed with a number of conspiracy theories, but his motives for the bombing apart from a desire to kill himself remain unclear. Metro
