THE Transportation department said Tuesday that it took delivery of the first batch of train cars from Spain and Mexico for use of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite extension.
“This means that after 19 long years of waiting, the LRT-1 Cavite extension is finally turning into reality,” the department said in a statement.
Japan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency, funded the manufacture of the 120 fourth-generation light rail vehicles.
The train cars will be provided to the LRT-1, with Mitsubishi Corp. as the implementing contractor, the Embassy of Japan in Manila said in a separate statement.

WEST ZONE water provider Maynilad Water Services, Inc. has completed the replacement and realignment of 6.7 kilometers of water pipelines in 2020 to assist ongoing government infrastructure projects.
In a statement on Tuesday, the concessionaire said primary and secondary pipelines were reconfigured in portions of Caloocan, Quezon City, Valenzuela, Parañaque, and Las Piñas.
The reconfiguration is to give way for ongoing construction works such as the construction of the Philippine National Railways North, Metro Rail Transit Line 7, and Light Rail Transit Line 1 extension, which aim to help improve the travel of commuters.
Maynilad Chief Operating Officer Randolph T. Estrellado said the reconfiguration of the pipelines is needed to avoid delay in the said government projects.

THE Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) said the Cavitex Infrastructure Corp. (CIC) and the Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA) have both filed a petition âfor the approval of add-on agreed toll rate with application for provisional reliefâ for the Segment 1 (R-1 Expressway) Enhancement of the Manila-Cavite Toll Expressway Project.
TRB Executive Director Abraham P. Sales said in a Jan. 11 notice that âany interested expressway userâ can file a âpetition to reviewâ within 30 days from the date of its first publication.
In its petition, CIC, the joint venture partner of PRA for the Manila-Cavite Toll Expressway Project, said they are entitled to recover the new investment for the enhancement of R-1 Expressway by way of an âadd-on toll rateâ as authorized by the Toll Operation Agreement (TOA) executed in 1996.

NLEX CORP. on Tuesday said the traffic flow at its toll plazas has improved after it carried out some measures to help control the congestion.
In an e-mailed statement, the tollway company reported that its average daily traffic had reached 323,000 from Dec. 18, 2020 to Jan. 4, 2021, or higher by 3,000 versus the traffic volume it saw in the first two weeks of December.
âWe are delighted that even with the recent spike in traffic figures, we have not seen our toll plazas getting jampacked,â NLEX Corp. President and General Manager J. Luigi L. Bautista was quoted as saying.
