Capita has announced plans to axe its Tesco Mobile contact centre in Radcliffe. The centre could close its doors as early as September. The proposals have upset employees who have described the plans as a “kick in the teeth” and Metro Mayor Andy Burnham and Bury Council leader Eamonn O’Brien are backing a Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) call to reverse the plans. Under the proposals Capita, say the union, want workers to relocate 35 miles away to Preston Brook, near Warrington. And 25 per cent of staff would have to work from home. Redeployment to other Capita sites is also suggested, with no pay guarantees.

Government ministers gave conflicting advice after new guidance was published last Friday, encouraging people to avoid essential travel in and out of the borough. However, Bolton Council leader, Cllr David Greenhalgh - backed by Metro Mayor Andy Burnham - has said that people are free to come and go in Bolton as they please. Cllr David Greenhalgh said: I want to say categorically to Bolton that after conversations with senior officials, both at public health NHS and Government, our position remains the same as it was. There are no additional restrictions, there is no legislation.
MATT Hancock has said that it is still too early to say whether the June 21 lifting of restrictions will go ahead. The Health Secretary told MPs in the House of Commons this morning that on Wednesday there were 3,180 new cases of coronavirus, which is the highest since April 12 - but that the vaccine rollout is working. He said: It s too early now to say, yet, whether we can take the full step four on June 21. Mr Hancock was appearing in the Commons to answer questions regarding former aide Dominic Cumming’s evidence on the Government’s handling of the pandemic.
