View Comments KESHENA - A Green Bay man died in a one-vehicle crash that was discovered on May 3, according to a Menominee County Sheriff’s Department report released Thursday morning. The driver, James B. Stewart, 60, had been involved in a hit-and-run crash in the northern Oconto County town of Doty before traveling to Menominee County, according to an Oconto County Sheriff’s report. The fatal crash was discovered on State 55 about a third of a mile north of Bear Trap Halls Road, approximately five miles north of Keshena, by a Menominee Tribal Police officer about 5:47 a.m. It appeared the southbound SUV went off the road and struck a large tree. Stewart died at the scene.

Escanaba Walmart evacuated Tuesday due to gun scare

ABC 10/CW5 ESCANABA -The Escanaba Walmart was locked down on Tuesday following a gun scare. A man reportedly entered the store on Lincoln Road at around 9:37 p.m. with a rifle. After a thorough search, police found no safety issues. It was later found on video surveillance that a customer returning an item to the store was mistaken for a rifle. The Escanaba Department of Public Safety was assisted on the scene by Delta County Central Dispactch, Delta County Sheriff’s Department, the  Michigan State Police, the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team, Hannahville Police Department, and the Menominee County Sheriff’s Department.

MENOMINEE A former Memominee County Sheriff’s Department deputy is facing additional sexual assault charges. Brian William Helfert, 57, of Menominee, was arraigned before Judge Robert J. Jamo in the 95-A District Court, Menominee, on April 30 following his recent arrest on an 11-count felony complaint. Menominee County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey T. Rogg charged Helfert with Child Sexually Abusive Activity, four counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct-First Degree, three counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct-Third Degree, Assault with Intent to Commit Penetration, Gross Indecency Between Males and filed a Sexually Delinquent Person Notice. An investigation by the Menominee Police Department led to Helfert’s arrest.
