To Build a Village – The Farmyard
Gary Dyck, Blog Coordinator Mennonite Heritage Village animal barn and farmyard.
I love working at the Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV). The heritage buildings, the artefacts, the stories, the grounds and of course the people – I love it all. However, my career in history and culture began forty years ago as a child in a farmyard.
Every summer I would make the one and a half mile trek from our house to an abandoned early 1900’s historic farmyard in the middle of field. The first artefact I would see on the yard was a dilapidated 1930’s farm truck near the creek. MHV has two trucks just like it that have been perfectly restored. Next, I would walk up to the grand hip barn – looking up it made me dizzy. I loved the feeling of a barn coming alive before my eyes.

Senior Curator, MHV Some of MHV s artefacts relating to Dietrich Klassen s military service during the Second World War. As his family described him when they donated these artefacts, Dietrich was both a lifetime member of a Mennonite church in Waterloo, Ontario as well as a very proud military man.
Mennonite Heritage Village’s (MHV) upcoming exhibit “Mennonites at War” explores the various responses Mennonites have had toward war and violence over their nearly five-hundred-year history. Last week’s Village News focused on the more common part of the conversation: the Mennonite belief in nonresistance and being conscientious objectors to war. This week, we look at the part of the exhibit that will explore Mennonites who responded to war and violence by taking up arms and joining the military.

Wendy Yates is the co-founder of Emerge Coaching and a life coach. Erin Mohr is the other co-founder. She is a certified life coach on top of an ordained licenced minister. Emerge Coaching was started in 2020 with the intention to help women overcome their struggles with fear. Providing a creative, innovative way that we could reach out to women, not only in a time of pandemic but in general because we know people are struggling with fear in ways that we don t see, beneath the surface, says Mohr.
