Great Conjunctions are an unforgettable event that describes the meeting of our solar system s biggest gas giants, Jupiter and Saturn. Skies across Alabama will likely be clear enough to glimpse the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn today after sunset. Here is the sky cover forecast for 5 p.m. CST Monday, which suggests clear to partly cloudy skies statewide.

Today, Monday, Dec. 21, 2020, marks the winter solstice, but that’s not all.
What’s often called the “longest night of the year” will also be one of the best nights to see a celestial rarity the conjunction of the planets Jupiter and Saturn.
The two planets are separated by hundreds of millions of miles but will appear almost as one in the night sky, and tonight they will seem the closest, according to NASA.

Jupiter and Saturn will shine together in a winter solstice Great Conjunction of 2020 in what many are likening to an early Christmas Star tonight (Dec. 21) and you can watch it live online here in a series of webcasts.
The two planets will appear close to each other in the night sky about every 20 years, but they re conjunction in 2020 on Dec. 21 is the closest they ve appeared since 1623. Even in that pairing, the conjunction wasn t visible to much of Earth. You have to go back 800 years to when the sight was last widely visible around the world.
