Russell says Mercedes relationship has not been damaged at all by Bottas crash at Imola

The crash between Williams’ George Russell and Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas at Imola was still a hot topic when Formula 1 arrived at Portimao for the 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix. But Russell said his relationship with his Mercedes benefactors had got stronger, rather than weaker, as a result of the crash. Russell and Bottas came together on Lap 32 of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix when Russell was lining up a pass on Bottas’ Mercedes for P9 – with the pair coming together on the entry to Tamburello in a spectacular crash that took both cars out of the race, and led to a red flag.

Mercedes very stretched on cost cap after Bottas s crash with Russell in Imola, says Wolff

The collision between Valtteri Bottas and George Russell at Imola had more implications than just the loss of points, according to Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, as there could be potential consequences over their 2022 Formula 1 car development too. When Russell attempted a pass on Bottas on Lap 32 of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the stakes were clear: there was a place with two points up for grabs for the Williams driver. But according to Mercedes boss Wolff, the sheer damage caused by the crash could also ‘stretch’ Mercedes finances and mean they cannot develop as expected in 2021. Asked whether the crash could hinder Mercedes with development for next year’s car, Wolff replied: “Yeah, absolutely. We are very stretched on cost cap and what we always feared is the total write off of a car. Now this one is not going to be a total write off – but almost – and that is not something we really wanted.”

It s physically not possible – Mercedes rule out shift to Red Bull high rake philosophy for this season

The aerodynamic rule tweaks for 2021 appear to have hurt teams running to a low rake design philosophy – like Mercedes – more than those running a high rake one, like Red Bull. But according to Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, simply shifting his team’s design philosophy towards Red Bull’s for this season is not the solution to the Silver Arrows’ problems. The rake angle of a car – the angle at which the floor slopes up from the front to the rear – is a crucial aspect of a team’s design philosophy. Mercedes have traditionally favoured a low rake design that makes the car more aerodynamically efficient, while Red Bull’s approach has been to use an aggressive, high rake angle to increase underbody downforce – a design philosophy Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey has favoured since back in his Williams days in the 1990s.

Toto Wolff very much hopes Lewis Hamilton continues with Mercedes in 2022 – and wants deal done by summer

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff says he wants seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton to extend his one-year contract with the Silver Arrows this summer, to avoid the same sort of delays that led to the Briton only renewing his deal in February 2021 – after his previous one had already expired. Both Hamilton and the Silver Arrows are aiming for their eighth respective championships in F1 this season, and hit the ground running as the reigning champ won the curtain-raising Bahrain Grand Prix in March. And Wolff is clearly keen on retaining the 36-year-old past 2021. Asked if he wanted Hamilton to stay on at Mercedes next season, Wolff replied: “I very much hope so; the journey that we have had together was very successful. He has been a Mercedes driver – a Mercedes kid since his go-karting years. He never raced a single weekend in Formula 1 without a Mercedes power unit, so it’s the logical continuation of the story.”
