May 14, 2021 Mel Trotter Ministries is spending $14.9 million to renovate the downtown Grand Rapids shelter. Mel Trotter President and CEO Dennis Van Kampen says the improvements are long overdue as nothing has been done in 54 years. The men s shelter will be transformed into two-bed rooms, with two rooms sharing a bathroom. (MLive file photo)Neil Blake | MLive Facebook Share GRAND RAPIDS, MI Mel Trotter Ministries has raised more than $9.8 million as part of a $14.9 million campaign to renovate its men’s homeless shelter, expand job training and offer more transitional housing. The faith-based nonprofit, located at 225 Commerce Ave. SW in Grand Rapids’ Heartside neighborhood, says it plans to begin construction on the renovated 113-bed shelter this summer, and that the project is expected to be complete by fall 2022.

The idea came up because of seeing footage of lines for people waiting for food. Zane said. I know Mel Trotter (Ministries) talked about the need for more food this year. It s been rough, and I had audience members who came up with the idea about doing something like this, so that all came together quite quickly, about 10 days ago, and that was about it.
