Former Hawk, Tisdale product commits to Marian University

A former Nipawin Hawk and Tisdale product has committed to post-secondary hockey. Jordan Simoneau, 22 years old, has committed to Marian University in Fon du Lac, Wisconsin. The Sabres play in the NCAA Division III ranks. Simoneau took a bit longer to decide to play NCAA hockey after his Junior A career came to a close with the Hawks in 2019/2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Kind of went out on a bad note with being shut down and everything, so I was kind of in the dumps about not wanting to play anymore,” Simoneau told northeastNOW. “And then once I started playing senior again, I realized how much I love the game and want to keep playing as long as I can.”

NESPCA and others benefit from dedicated work of Melfort volunteer Pat Rumberger

Melfort, SK, Canada / CJVR Today s Best Country Apr 20, 2021 12:00 PM It is National Volunteer week and northeastNOW is featuring community volunteers who go above and beyond all year round. Melfort’s Pat Rumberger has spent countless hours as a volunteer in the region over the years and finds it difficult to narrow down everything she has given her time to. “People who volunteer don’t do it for recognition but to improve life in their community for others and make it a place for people to want to live in,” Rumberger said. In recent years, she focuses on volunteering for the North East SPCA, which she said is near and dear to her heart.

Nipawin Hawks acquire Ante Mustapic

The 6’4” Vancouver native comes to the Hawks with just 12 games of SJHL experience with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks of the British Columbia Hockey League, and the Pontiacs of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, where he has posted just two assists. “We wanted more of a D first defenseman; a guy that can really control the corners, make a good outlet pass. The great thing with his age, there’s going to be a lot of room for growth and improvement within these next couple of years,” noted Doug Johnson, the Hawks’ head coach and general manager. The move to acquire Mustapic helps the Hawks get a little deeper on the blue-line, and solidifies the back end a little more, says Johnson.

One year later: Mustangs and Trojans reflect on final games prior to COVID-19 shutdown

It’s been one year since the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown everything in Saskatchewan, including hockey. Locally, the Melfort Mustangs were in the middle of a heated Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) playoff series with the Estevan Bruins, while the Tisdale Trojans were looking to continue their run in the Saskatchewan U18 AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL). It all came to a halt on March 12, 2020, and a year later northeastNOW looks back at the last games of both teams, what the coaches and players remember from those games, and what they’ve learned through the pandemic.
