The Art of Distraction is a new exhibition being held as part of the Melbourne Design Week to showcase how art in the built environment can bring joy, delight and hope when faced with obstacles.
Curated by leading Australian architecture and interior design practice, Bates Smart, which continues its association with the Melbourne Design Week, the exhibition explores award-winning illustrator Jane Reiseger’s work at The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne.
The Art of Distraction, which will run from Friday, March 26 until Saturday April 1, 2021, showcases a special collection of original drawings and pieces by Reiseger, with the curated display not only illustrating her creative process but also providing an insight into how her ideas were transformed into the hospital’s eight key themes, inspired by local Victorian environments.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: The Side Kick pendant, which laid the foundations for the Step & Kick series, is a classically simple design that has led us down a path of refining materials and an emphasis on detail. We produce a new series every year, so to take a breath and just look back on such a varied body of work is a proud, but short-lived moment before we start seeking out the next thing!
Describe the problem your work solves: We make everything by hand to develop a connection between the material and the maker. This allows for flexibility in how others interpret our lighting since the finish, scale, and configuration can all be adapted to suit each space. Because of this process, our designs each have their own unique personality imparted by the hand of the person who made it. We hope the joy we find in our work shows through in our designs.

Solar flares explode across a blue sky. Beneath Ash Keatingâs vast rooftop mural
A New Response, John Wardle Architects have reimagined the solar panel. High above Little Collins Street, the array generates not just power but doubles as shelter, meeting space and rooftop garden. Keatingâs mural, created with fire extinguishers loaded with paint, is designed to âgive the space a party atmosphereâ, he says. âItâs about positive vibe and energy.â
