Updated Mar 01, 2021;
KALAMAZOO, MI The last year has vastly changed the job market. But one Kalamazoo organization has found new opportunities amid the pandemic for adults with disabilities and mental illness.
More job openings have led Kalamazoo companies to be more open to hiring within the disability community, said Jonathan Kraker, MRC’s Director of Community Employment. MRC Industries Inc. serves individuals across the county with developmental or intellectual disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, emotional impairments and mental illness.
The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped Michigan’s workforce. Most recent U.S. Department of Labor data shows there were about 590,963 Michiganders getting unemployment pay for the week of Feb. 8.

For students hoping to learn more about mental and physical health resources offered by KPU, a new program will soon be able to provide that where students can access it from the comfort of home.
The Peer Wellness Program is a brand new, volunteer-led initiative launching on Feb. 22. Virtual drop-in sessions are hosted by student volunteers five days a week, focusing on available health and wellness resources and social engagement.
They’re not accepting new volunteers, but interested students can check their website for updates. Volunteers undergo extensive training, including listening skills, leadership and presentation skills, and bystander intervention. Matthews says volunteers receive great training that can help them with their future education or career paths.
COLUMBIA - Roads are covered with snow and slush, making conditions dangerous for drivers. The snow paired with the low temperatures can lead drivers to slip and spin on the roads.Â
Coach Megan Matthews is a Columbia driving instructor that has some tips for this week s weather. Though she teaches new drivers on the road, Matthews explained some common mistakes even experienced drivers make. Seasoned drivers will not take enough time when stopping when the weather gets like this, Matthew said. Stopping and braking distance will be different today because our tires are not connecting with the concrete. Â
MoDOT recommended drivers avoid traveling on Monday so the snow crews could get out on the roads.
