President Joe Biden used his address to Congress Wednesday to pitch his American Jobs Plan and a new $1.8 trillion American Families Plan that invests in families, children and the education system.
âMadame Speaker, Madame Vice President,â Biden began his speech, gesturing to the women behind him. âNo president has ever said those words from this podium, and itâs about time.â
During a presidentâs speech to the joint session of Congress, it is custom for two politicians in power to sit behind him: the vice president and the speaker of the House. Should the president be unable to carry the duties of his office, the constitutional line of succession begins with the vice president â in this case, Harris, a woman â and then the House speaker â in this case, Pelosi, also a woman.Â
