Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis in adults.1 Gout prevalence is rising in the last few decades worldwide with an estimated prevalence of 3.9 per cent in the United States,2 0.9 – 2.4 per cent in Europe,3,4 and even higher in regions such as East Asia, wherein a country like Taiwan, 1 in 16 people has gout.5

At the beginning of February, The Mater Foundation launched its annual ‘100 Miles in a Month’ campaign, to raise crucial funds for The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin.
Kildare-native Kathleen Treacy is one of the participants taking on this challenge. Kathleen was born at 26 weeks with Congenital Heart Disease. At just two years old, Kathleen first received open heart surgery in Crumlin. Two decades later she went under the knife again at The Mater Hospital for follow up open heart surgery, and has had three more heart operations since along with having an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) fitted.
Minister of State Damien English appoints Dr David Begg as Chairperson of the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC)
Minister Damien English TD, Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment has appointed Dr David Begg as Chairperson of the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC).
The appointment is made following an open recruitment campaign conducted by the Public Appointments Service (PAS). This is the second appointment to the position of Chairperson since the establishment of the WRC on 1 October 2015.
The Chairperson of the WRC Board is a statutory appointment under section 10 of the Workplace Relations Act 2015. The appointment of Dr Begg as Chairperson is for five years from 1 February 2021 to 31 January 2026.

Former General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions David Begg has been appointed Chairperson of the Workplace Relations Commission.
The appointment for a five-year term was announced by Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment Damien English.
Mr Begg replaces Paul Duffy, who chaired the WRC from 2015.
The appointment was made following an open recruitment campaign carried out by the Public Appointments Service.
Alongside this latest appointment, Mr Begg chairs the Pensions Authority, the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and the Fire Service National Oversight Implementation Group of the Department of the Environment.
