ROME, JAN 28 - President Sergio Mattarella s formal
consultations on Italy s government crisis get going in earnest
on Thursday when he begins talks with the political parties
represented in parliament.
Giuseppe Conte quit as premier on Tuesday, marking the collapse
of his second government, as the executive no longer had an
absolute majority in the Senate after ex-premier Matteo Renzi s
Italia Viva (IV) party withdrew its support.
IV, the centre-left Democratic Party and the leftwing LeU are
among the groups the head of State will meet on Thursday.

ROME, JAN 27 - President Sergio Mattarella is set to
start a round of formal consultations on Wednesday after
Giuseppe Conte quit as premier on Tuesday, marking the collapse
of his second government.
The government no longer had an absolute majority in the Senate
after ex-premier Matteo Renzi s Italia Viva (IV) party triggered
a crisis in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic by withdrawing
its support.
The other parties in the ruling coalition, the 5-Star Movement
(M5S), the centre-left Democratic party (PD) and the left-wing
ROME: Italy s president will begin discussions with political leaders Wednesday on forming a new government following the resignation of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
Conte stepped down on Tuesday after divisions in the ruling coalition left him without a parliamentary majority but is hoping to return at the head of a strengthened government.
President Sergio Mattarella, the ultimate arbiter of Italian politics, asked Conte to stay on while he establishes if this is viable or if someone else should take over.
The head of state is set to meet the presidents of both parliamentary chambers before talks on Thursday and Friday with party leaders.

ROME, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Giuseppe Conte resigned as Italian prime minister on Tuesday, hoping to be granted a fresh mandate by the head of state to form a new government after a coalition rupture last week left him without a majority in the Senate.
President Sergio Mattarella is expected to hold two days of formal consultations with all the parties this week before deciding what to do next. Here are possible scenarios.
