Editor s Notebook: A special thank you to our first round of donors

Victorville Daily Press My mom is a greeting card person the kind who loves giving, receiving and hoarding them. I’m fairly certain she still has boxes upon boxes of old Christmas and birthday cards stashed away someplace, and they mean a lot to her. One story she’s told me more than once involves a deceased aunt who tugged on my mom’s shirt one day while she looked through old cards, lingering on one from her aunt that made her cry. The tug was her aunt’s way of saying she was OK. It’s a good reminder that even the simplest things gain in significance as the years pass especially when loss and pain get involved.

Thanks to Report for America, Barstow is getting a new reporter

Victorville Daily Press On Nov. 3, 2020, as much of America watched the presidential election play out, I focused on a local race that piqued my interest due to its potential to dramatically alter the makeup of one High Desert council and the direction of a city. In the end, voters did dramatically alter the makeup of the Barstow City Council, ousting two-term Mayor Julie Hackbarth-McIntyre and two-term District 4 Councilwoman Carmen Hernandez in favor of Paul Courtney and Marilyn Dyer-Kruse, respectively. District 3 voters, meanwhile, elected Barbara Rose, who filled the seat vacated by Rich Harpole in December 2019. The results equaled what journalists like to call a “seismic shift” on the dais. Courtney, Dyer-Kruse and Rose each backed by the Barstow Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 2325 suddenly comprised the City Council majority. Their colleagues, Tim Silva and James Noble, were all but relegated to the sidelines.

Barstow Community College, Barstow High School to host inaugural Quick Pitch Competition

Victorville Daily Press Barstow Community College has announced an inaugural competition in partnership with Barstow High School that officials say will allow students to present business ideas for a chance to win money and connect with a consultant.  With the 1st annual Quick Pitch Competition, BCC and Barstow High School students will compete via three-minute pitch videos to see who has the most innovative ideas for a new start-up, or an idea that improves upon an existing business. Dr. Crystal Nasio, dean of Instruction, Workforce and Economic Development at BCC, said the college and high school hope the contest will inspire the new generation of entrepreneurs in the High Desert.
