San Francisco pastor to become Lutheran church s first openly transgender bishop

SAN FRANCISCO - A San Francisco pastor has made history, being elected as the first openly transgender bishop of any major U.S. Christian denomination.
On Saturday, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s Sierra Pacific Synod selected Rev. Megan Rohrer as its next bishop.

Rohrer, who uses the pronouns they and them, currently serves as pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in San Francisco’s Sunset District, which calls itself a small but mighty congregation… unafraid of sharing God s love to the full diversity of creation.

A regional body of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has elected the first openly transgender bishop in the liberal mainline Protestant denominationâs history.
The Rev. Megan Rohrer, who uses the pronouns of âtheyâ and âthemâ rather than gender-specific terms, was elected Saturday to head the California-based ELCA Sierra Pacific Synod.
Rohrer won on the fifth ballot during the online synod assembly, receiving 209 votes and narrowly defeating the Rev. Jeff R. Johnson of Berkeley, California, who received 207 votes.

The Rev. Megan Rohrer will be the new bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s (ELCA) Sierra Pacific synod, becoming the first transgender person to serve as bishop in the denomination, or in any of the U.S.’ major Christian faiths. As a trans person, it is something that I know is bigger than just one person. It s something that s historic and I feel blessed to get to be a part of it, Rohrer said.
In September, Rohrer will begin serving a six-year term at the Sierra Pacific Synod based in Sacramento, and serving Northern California and parts of Northern Nevada.

Doris Anne Henderson, 95, Martinsburg, passed away Tuesday afternoon at UPMC Altoona. She was born in Houtzdale, daughter of the late Thomas F. and Ida Louise “Margaret” (Wiberg) Gorman.
In 1950, she married William Kyle Henderson, who preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 1977.
Surviving is a daughter, Patricia L. Henderson, of Pittsburgh.
Doris received her bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania Teacher’s College and later earned a master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University. She was employed as an elementary school teacher and reading specialist for the Tussey Mountain School District for over 20 years.
She was a longtime, active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg, and a member of the Martinsburg Business and Professional Women’s Club. Doris also volunteered countless hours at the Martinsburg Community Library, which was the place that held her two passions in life, books and reading.
