The numbers are disheartening.
Last April 2 the country logged a total of 15,310 new COVID-19 cases (3,790 of which were backlogs). The following day the number of new cases was 12,576 which brought our active cases to a staggering 165,715. These numbers might still climb before we feel the real effect of the most recent lockdown imposed by government.
The lockdown has resulted in unemployment. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported last week that the unemployment rate has increased to 8.8 percent in February compared to January’s 8.7 percent rate. Some might say that the .1 percentage point uptick is negligible but that actually represents 234,000 people who lost their jobs. And if we assume an average family size of 4, that .1 percent increase means 936,000 people have been affected by job losses this pandemic. All in all, a total of 4.187 million are without work.

The Villar Group announced that it is set to vaccinate its employees, workers, and their families nationwide as it continues to be proactive in its fight against COVID-19.
Aside from Oxford-Astra Zeneca vaccine it ordered earlier, the Group said it has ordered vaccines from Moderna for its existing workforce. It is also finalizing the process to allow employees to access vaccines for their families and household.
“Ensuring the health and safety of our employees is our top priority. The vaccine will not only help build immunity from the virus, but will also help boost consumer confidence to go out again. Hence, the vaccine will not only save lives but jobs and businesses, as well,” said Villar Group Chairman Manny Villar.
Asia Art Tours Interviews Bandilang Itim: Philippines & Anarchism
Asia Art Tours interviews Bandilang Itim.
To better understand the history of Anarchism in the Philippines and the state terror unleashed by Rodrigo Duterte, we were thrilled to speak with the Bandilang Itim collective.
Asia Art Tours: From this summer of global uprisings, one of the main lessons I took away was the importance of translation. When it comes to Bandilang Itim (a Tagalog translation of ‘Black Flag’) could you let us know (and take as much time as you’d like), historically what are some of the most important abolitionist/anarchist/communist terms that define the leftism of the Philippines?
