HOPKINS, MN While U.S. coronavirus cases and deaths have been trending downward over the past week, hospitals across the country still report straining to meet the demands of the ongoing pandemic.
At the national level, during the week ending Jan. 25, deaths were running at an average of just under 3,100 a day down from a peak of more than 3,350 in the weeks prior, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. New cases were averaging about 170,000 a day after hitting almost 250,000 earlier this month.
Meanwhile, state health officials in Minnesota reported to the federal government that 72 percent of all inpatient beds in hospitals across the state were still occupied as of Jan. 23. Around 6 percent of beds statewide were filled by COVID-19 patients, they reported.

HealthPartners has released the most popular baby names in 2020 at its birth centers in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
The list demonstrates the five most popular girl names and five most popular boy names out of nearly 10,000 births at HealthPartner’s nine hospitals this year.
HealthPartners also delivers babies at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, Maple Grove Hospital in Maple Grove and Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids.

The Maple Grove City Council discussed several different housing projects, including apartments and townhomes during its Dec. 7 meeting.
These projects include the third and final phase of the Bottineau Ridge Apartments, new projects located near Jefferson Highway and Highway 610 and one near Maple Grove Hospital.
BOTTINEAU RIDGE
The council considered the third, and final phase, of the Bottineau Ridge Apartment development. These apartments would be located west of Hemlock Lane and north of Arbor Lakes Parkway.
Bottineau Ridge provides workforce housing to families.
Community and Economic Development Director Joe Hogeboom said the proposal would consist of a four-story, 50-unit building, which will mirror the second phase building. Both the second and third phases will be connected through a courtyard area.
Two Semis Involved in Crash on I-94 in Albertville
ALBERTVILLE One semi driver was taken to the hospital after being involved in a crash on Interstate 94 near Albertville. The Minnesota State Patrol says the crash happened at about 1:20 p.m. Wednesday.
The incident involved a pair of semis with one semi going into the median, crashing through the concrete barrier, and entering the westbound lanes. The second semi then crashed into the first semi.
Fifty-nine-year-old
Forty-one-year-old Jason Ranta of Sauk Centre was not hurt.
Interstate 94 was closed in both directions in that area for several hours as crews worked to clear that scene along with several other crashed and stalled vehicles.
