Guinea trying out south-south cooperation venture with Tunisia
Trade in Guinea today centres mostly around the export of gold and bauxite, which is used to create aluminum. The country has the world’s largest deposits of the red rock, and aluminum prices are increasing.
But, approximately 85% of Guinea’s population are subsistence agriculturalists, and the country is one of the poorest in the world.
In an effort to expand the country’s income potential in agriculture, a new partnership has formed under a south-south cooperation umbrella, with Tunisia offering learnings from its own boosting of agricultural exports.
“Our project is the first south-south project in Guinea,” said Guinea Technical Cooperation Agency Director General Patrice Camara, who is coordinating the implementation. “The evolution of the project will allow us to open up to the world and attract the interest of other countries for technical cooperation and economic partnership.”

Joint $500,000 fund to ‘fuel SME incubation’

The UN Development Programme (UNDP) in Cambodia on December 28 announced a new joint $500,000 investment in grants and e-commerce training for 125 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The funds are backed by UNDP Cambodia, the Ministry of Commerce and the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF), UNDP Cambodia said in a press release.
The UN agency said the investment “will fuel an innovative six-month incubation and training initiative and small-grants programme to help SMEs move online, sell online, and, for some, sell to overseas customers through a new online marketplace [B2B2C] being developed by the” ministry.

ADDIS ABABA Nearly 3.6 million cars have used two Chinese built expressways in the first five months of the current Ethiopian Fiscal Year (EFY) 2020/2021, an Ethiopian official said on Monday.
Speaking to Xinhua, Zahara Mohammed, Communications and Marketing Team Leader at Ethiopian Toll Roads Enterprise (ETRE), said 3,596,852 cars used the 76-km Addis Ababa-Adama toll expressway and the 220-km Dire Dawa-Dewele toll road in the first five months of 2020/2021 EFY, earning more than 4 million U.S. dollars for the country.
