National Weather Service to survey storm damage in Jefferson County today

Fultondale tornado survey update: Alabama storm ruled an EF-3, according to National Weather Service Updated Jan 26, 2021; The National Weather Service in Birmingham has confirmed that the tornado that hit the northern Jefferson County city of Fultondale late Monday was an EF-3 with winds estimated at 150 mph. The tornado-warned storm moved through that area late Monday night and is being blamed for considerable damage in the cities of Fultondale and Center Point, which are just north of Birmingham. One person has been killed and at least 30 others were injured. The weather service storm survey team looked at the central Alabama damage for much of the day. It gave the storm a preliminary rating of a “high-end” EF-2 at first but cautioned that it could change and it did after more assessment.

2 Tornadoes Touched Down Christmas Eve In Jacksonville, NWS Confirms

The twister lasted about five minutes and had max winds of 105 miles an hour, which, according to the NWS, damaged trees but did not injure anyone. The tornado had a maximum width of 100 yards, the size of a football field, and traveled just over half a mile, starting just west of Heather Run Drive, eventually crossing Baymeadows Road and reaching just inside the Deerwood subdivision, before it dissipated. In addition to the tornado that touched down in the Baymeadows area, the National Weather Service on Wednesday confirmed a second twister cut across part of Mandarin on Christmas Eve. An NWS Survey today of damage in the Mandarin area from storms on 12/24 determined there was a QLCS tornado with max winds of 105 mph with a max width of 60 yards & an estimated path of just under 1 mile.
