New Bedford Issued $27,500 in Parking Ban Fines on Monday NEW BEDFORD The snow may have washed away, but the fines for violating the city’s parking ban on Monday still remain. The New Bedford Police Department issued 550 tickets on Monday during the hours of the parking ban, totaling $27,500 in fines. The police say no vehicles were towed as a result of the ban. In anticipation of a storm that was expected to bring plowable snow by late morning or early afternoon, the City of New Bedford put a parking ban into effect at 8 a.m. Monday morning, which was announced to the public Sunday evening. With the storm bringing little to no snow accumulation before changing over to rain, the parking ban was rescinded at 5 p.m. Monday.

New Mass COVID vaccination site opens in New Bedford recreation center

NEW BEDFORD The Andrea McCoy Recreation Center on Hillman Street has opened as a vaccination site as of Tuesday. According to city media spokesperson Jon Carvalho, the city opened the site to vaccinate individuals in Phase 1 of the distribution plan. The site was opened to accommodate large quantities of the vaccine so first responders and essential personnel can be efficiently vaccinated. The center s gymnasium is currently the location of vaccine distribution. On opening day, 80 doses were distributed, according to a video posted to Twitter by Mayor Jon Mitchell, but it wasn t nearly enough to put a dent in the challenge that we have in front of us.

In just one week, New Bedford s COVID recovery center has 32 patients NEW BEDFORD After its opening week, the city s COVID-19 recovery and care center on Acushnet Avenue has seen an influx of patients. As of Jan. 28, there are 32 patients admitted at the center, according to city media spokesperson Jon Carvalho. The surge center opened on Jan. 18 to house patients battling the virus with extensive recovery times that require ongoing care. This eases the burden from hospitals by opening up beds and allowing more patients to be admitted. In the press release, Mayor Jon Mitchell said he decided to reopen the facility to assist the region s health care system and the recent surge of COVID-19 patients. It s the only one of its kind in the state. The state has established field hospitals elsewhere, like in Lowell and Worcester, but without one in the SouthCoast, the city of New Bedford stepped up to open this facility. 

New Bedford Police Officer s Home Reportedly Fired Upon

NEW BEDFORD The home of a New Bedford Police officer was reportedly fired upon early Thursday morning, and two city councilors are wondering why they, other officers and citizens were not notified immediately. “I know it’s an ongoing investigation, but you know and I know some things you can say, some things you can’t say, but you can say things to the public that wouldn’t impede your investigation,” City Councilor-at-Large Ian Abreu said. WBSM’s Barry Richard reported on his program Friday afternoon that he had confirmed with multiple sources that between 2:30 and 3 a.m. Thursday, a single gunman fired eight shots into the apartment of a police officer. WBSM is withholding the officer’s name and address for safety and the integrity of the ongoing police investigation. The officer was reportedly on patrol at the time and no one was at the residence. Former New Bedford Mayor Dies Suddenly Of COVID-19 Complications

Jan 27, 2021 BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) Fred Kalisz, former longtime Mayor of New Bedford, and the current Bristol County Registrar of Deeds, died early Wednesday from complications of the coronavirus. 63-year-old Kalisz served New Bedford as a City Councilor before he was elected as mayor for four terms from 1997 to 2006. During his tenure, Kalisz was known for resuming ferry service between the city and Martha s Vineyard, renovating the Buttonwood Park Zoo, and his work in improving education. New Bedford s current Mayor Jon Mitchell has ordered all flags at city-owned buildings to be lowered to half-staff, and he said in a statement that Kalisz had an unwavering support of the city.
