The Fort Steuben Daughters of the American Revolution Centennial Bench Committee, Regent Vickie Joseph, Denese White, Karen Watson Blanc and Janet Rymer, met May 1 at Historic Fort Steuben, Steubenville, with Executive Director Paul Zuros and Mayor Jerry Barilla to finalize plans for the dedication of the centennial commemorative bench. DAR members and friends are encouraged to attend this Saturday’s meeting at noon at Historic Fort Steuben for the chapter’s dedication of the bench to the fort. Barilla announced that the dedication will be held inside the Visitor Center with the DAR lunch and business meeting to follow. STEUBENVILLE Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine called COVID-19 vaccines “our ticket to freedom” during a Monday stop in Steubenville
DeWine and his wife, Fran, toured the Jefferson County Health Department’s vaccination clinic inside the Fort Steuben Mall on Monday, talking with staff, local officials and those receiving the shot.
“Here’s the bottom line the vaccine is our ticket to a good spring, the vaccine is the ticket to a good summer, the vaccine is our ticket out of this pandemic,” DeWine said. “That’s how we get our freedom back. That’s good for our psyche, but it probably is not, in the long run, good for our democratic form of government.
We’re going through what is, probably, the most off of all of the recent off-year election cycles. Not that we didn’t need a little bit of a break, having come through one of the most contentious presidential elections many of us have ever witnessed.
And in the end, we learned, once again, about the importance of voting. There were about 155,506,321 votes cast for president in November. When all of those votes were counted, Joe Biden won not only the popular vote 81,283,361 to Donald Trump’s 74,222,960 but also prevailed in the Electoral College, 306 to 232.

STEUBENVILLE Two issues involving public input and comment were raised at Tuesday’s Steubenville City Council meeting.
First Ward Councilwoman Asantewa Anyabwile asked fellow council members their thoughts on establishing a city Facebook page while introducing an ordinance that would eliminate the sign-in period for those wishing to address the panel.
Anyabwile said many have turned to social media for information and suggested it could be a way to reach the public in addition to the media and the AlertMedia app recently adopted by the city.
Through the app, the city may send messages by text, e-mail, voice or desktop.
