Restaurants aren t the only ones understaffed right now; the City of Spokane is also dealing with an increase in vacancies exacerbated by a variety of pandemic-related pressures. There are roughly 183 open positions in the city government right now. Officials say that s only slightly higher than normal. But, with an increasing number of high-profile resignations in recent months and a red-hot job market, there s rising concern about burnout and the ability to fill those roles. Transitioning into a remote work setting was a challenge for many city employees, and now so is transitioning out of it.

Spokane Must Now Open Cooling Centers at 95 Degrees

Credit Doug Nadvornick/SPR Cooling Centers opened in Spokane Public Libraries and at the Looff Carousel today and will be open until the temperature drops below 95 degrees. The cooling centers re-opened after the Spokane City Council updated an ordinance outlining when the city needs to provide shelter – during heat, winter and smoke events. Councilwoman Lori Kinnear called on the mayor’s administration to plan ahead for those events, which are likely to become more common due to the worsening climate crisis. “We lost 20 people this last heat wave and I’m determined we should not lose anymore because of this excessive heat.”

Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward will be hosting a public discussion on a City ordinance that addresses temporary supplemental hazard sheltering for extreme weather conditions, unhealthy air quality, and other environmental hazards. The public discussion will be held on Wednesday from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena Board Room. City Council members, shelter providers, members of the human services board, city staff, and others are all welcome to attend the discussion.
