BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A group of mothers whose sons were shot and killed is leading Baton Rougeâs charge to reduce violence.
The District Attorneyâs office is investigating 17 homicides that occurred during January. In total, 19 people were stabbed or shot to death in East Baton Rouge Parish during 2021â²s first month.
âWhen you lose your child, itâs a different impact on your life,â Elizabeth Robinson said. Her son, Louis, was shot and killed in May 2018. âPeople say, âOh, itâs going to be alright.â No, itâs not. Itâs never going to change. You carry that pain with you for life.â

Violence in East Baton Rouge is showing no signs of slowing after the deadliest January on record.
During a news conference Tuesday, Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome introduced a new initiative to combat gun violence called Project Safe Neighborhoods.
As part of the program, an organization named C.H.A.N.G.E. plans to walk around neighborhoods hit hard with crime and pass out flyers showcasing resources available, as well as provide gun locks to anyone who needs one.
C.H.A.N.G.E. will be visiting the Dixie area this Saturday and Eden Park on February 20.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The family of State Representative Steve Carter has announced a private service will be held to mourn the Louisiana lawmaker.
According to his obituary, the intimate service, open only to family members, will be at First Presbyterian Church.
The Carter family asks that , in lieu of flowers, please send donations to St Lillian Academy.
Steve Carter, former Louisiana State Representative and East Baton Rouge mayoral candidate, died after being hospitalized with coronavirus, a family representative confirmed to WAFB.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome announced Thursday, Jan. 14 East Baton Rouge Parish will stay in its current modified version of Phase 2 of reopening the economy, for now, unless the parishâs COVID-19 situation does not improve.
However, Mayor Broome said if the community spread of COVID-19 and hospitalizations from the virus do not decrease she will have to move the parish back to Phase 1.
âI am giving us one more chance for us to make that change,â Mayor Broome said.
