Development desired: Former Dartmouth mayor says Halifax council neglecting other side of harbour

DARTMOUTH, N.S. There is no secret that development has been on the rise for years in Halifax, as evidenced by the many cranes visible across the city skyline. But former Dartmouth mayor and Halifax city councillor Gloria McCluskey thinks that development, and taxpayers dollars, are being too heavily focused on the Halifax side of the peninsula. $63 million library, $16.2 million pool, $80 million for the Halifax Forum, says McCluskey. A lot of tax dollars coming from Dartmouth. McCluskey says business parks in Burnside and Dartmouth Crossing generate a lot of tax revenue for the city, and Dartmouth isn t seeing their fair share of development.

Amendment to Halifax Regional Municipality Charter

Amendment to Halifax Regional Municipality Charter April 8, 2021 - 11:12 AM Government is amending the Halifax Regional Municipality Charter to support the municipality’s plan to improve the pool area on the Central Common. The municipality also plans to build a new pool and splash pad. “The Halifax Common pool and splash pad is a popular destination for residents in the summer and the current facilities do not meet accessibility standards, said Municipal Affairs Minister Brendan Maguire. “The municipality has identified this project in its budget as a priority to ensure access for its residents.”

Armed with pamphlets, she gave one to Mayor Mike Savage as he headed into City Hall to continue the day s council meeting. When asked how she feels policing is working for her community, Downey s answer was blunt. How is it working? It s not working. What they need to do is they need to do the work concerning restorative justice … They need to talk to the people in the community, she said. An hour and a half after her visit to Grand Parade, city council voted unanimously for an independent review of how policing services are delivered in the city.
