Staff reports Utica Common Councilman Delvin Moody announced Saturday on Twitter he tested positive for coronavirus. I am a little under the weather and have been experiencing flu like symptoms, he wrote in the tweet. However, my spirit is strong! I will quarantine for 14-days and keep you all updated when necessary. Moody, who ran uncontested in 2019 at age 23 to represent Utica s Fifth Ward, joins at least three other local leaders who have contracted coronavirus. Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri announced Dec. 11 he tested positive for COVID-19, later describing symptoms of severe muscle aches, fatigue and dizziness.  Some days I thought I was getting better and then the next day it would kick me right on the butt,  he said.

A newly formed local coalition is asking area police departments to include certain measures in their state-mandated police reform plans. The Black Leadership Coalition of Utica a group of Black and Latino not-for-profits, faith-based organizations, community groups and individuals formed recently to address racial inequities, according to an announcement Wednesday from the coalition. An executive order from Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued last summer required community police forces to submit a plan to reinvent and modernize their departments by April 1, 2021, to be eligible for state funding. Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri announced his appointments to the city’s police reform advisory committee Aug. 31, and said the committee already met three times prior.

Latest coronavirus numbers in Oneida County Oneida County reported 179 new coronavirus cases Tuesday, bringing the county’s total to 8,150 after two positive cases were removed from the previous total, officials said. Two of the new cases involve nursing home residents. Another death also was reported, bringing the county’s total to 178. The county has 3,946 active cases, with 4,026 having been resolved. There are 121 patients hospitalized in Oneida County, with 100 in the Mohawk Valley Health System and 21 at Rome Memorial Hospital. Fifteen of the patients are nursing home residents. Thirteen patients are hospitalized outside the county. There are 3,946 people in mandatory isolation and another 2,588 in mandatory quarantine.
