FRIDAY should have been Warrington Walking Day, one of the most historic dates in the town calendar. The history of walking day dates back to the 19th century, but this year it was cancelled for the second year in a row due to the pandemic. Lots of readers got in touch to share their memories of the special day from times gone by.
Yvonne Mattocks ‘‘I loved it when I worked on Church Street years ago. We were given permission to stand out on the street and watch the walkers go past. It really was one of the highlights of the town. I hope it will be reinstated next year.’’

To be on the Best U.S. Companies for Diversity list, companies must score from 90 to 100 points in the NDC Index. £750 for promising comedy talent
The comedy writing prize set up in memory of Reggie Perrin creator David Nobbs has increased its prize.
This year’s winner will receive £750, up from £500, while any runners-up will continue to receive £250. Also, for the first time, winners will get a one-on-one consultation with an established comedy producer.
Entries have opened today for the award. Hopefuls must already have a broadcast credit for writing, and submit a 500-word statement describing their career goals.
Judges are Lucy Lumsden, owner of Yellow Door Productions and formerly head of comedy commissioning at both Sky and the BBC; the comedian Roisin Conaty, who created the Channel 4 sitcom, Gameface; and actor and writer Daniel Lawrence Taylor, whose comedy Timewasters is currently being adapted for a possible US TV series.
