Commentary: Power-grabbing bills hide behind Lady Justice Stephen Sheppard, For the Express-News May 18, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail Three bills in the Texas Legislature would make the justice system less fair, rewarding big business and bureaucrats.Comstock /Getty Images Three bills in the Texas Legislature look helpful for the judicial system, but there is a hint of the poisoned apple in each one:  Senate Bill 1529 creates a new statewide court for cases involving the governor or attorney general.  House Bill 1875 creates a statewide court system for big business cases.  Senate Bill 11 would crunch the state’s 14 appeals courts into seven. At first glance, each bill looks smart. Less administration. More expertise. But these bills are power grabs that corrode the people’s access to justice before fair and disinterested judges.
