Jim Strickland’s advice to fellow ranchers interested in combating climate change is simple: Stay in business.
“Nearly every acre in Florida that’s developed, other than the barrier islands, was formerly a cattle ranch,” says the lifelong Manatee County rancher. “If it wasn t a cattle ranch, it was probably timber or farms. If we can work out ways to keep our ranches and farms and timber operations in business then that in itself is going to help with global warming. Because once that land is sold and becomes a subdivision with impermeable surfaces, the water hydrology changes, and you have no carbon sequestration to speak of. We don’t want to stop development. That s a huge economic engine, but there needs to be balance.
Jean Weidner Goldstein, one of the co-chairs of the campaign to raise funds for a major renovation to the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens master plan, has made a $1 million gift to the project.
The endowment gift will go to Innovating a Greener Future – Living Inspiration for The Living Museum: The Campaign for Selby Gardens. Selby Gardens is an extraordinary garden of international stature, not only for its world-class collections, but for the master plan, Goldstein said in a statement. The sustainability features of this master plan will solidify Selby Gardens as a leader in sustainability worldwide.
Selby Gardens has raised more than $35 million, or about 80% of the $42.5 million needed to launch the first phase of the new master plan, and a groundbreaking ceremony is planned on June 3.

Jean Weidner Goldstein has donated $1 million to help Marie Selby Botanical Gardens implement its master plan for renovating its bayfront campus in downtown Sarasota, the nonprofit announced today.
The gift will go towards Selby Gardens’ endowment, which it is establishing alongside an effort to raise $72 million in capital funds for a 10-year, multiphase project at 1534 Mound St. Selby s master plan includes a new parking garage, plant research facility, greenhouse complex, welcome center, learning pavilion and restaurant.

More than 25,503 businesses and nonprofits in Sarasota and Manatee counties collected federal assistance through the Paycheck Protection Program to keep workers employed during the coronavirus pandemic.
In Sarasota County, the health care and social assistance industry received the largest chunk of money, pulling in a combined $172.7 million in loans, which don’t have to be paid back if they are used for certain purposes. The county’s construction industry collected $166 million.
In Manatee County, the construction industry received $103.7 million in loans. Health care and social assistance got $95.5 million.
