Choosing a college can be one of the most important decisions in a person s life. The universities that students attend will train them for their future careers, give them the education they need to think critically and solve real-world problems, and connect them to a lifelong social network and community. While invaluable, the benefits of higher education don t come cheap especially if the choice is a private school. Tuition and fees at private colleges clocked in at more than $35,000 a year on average in the 2018-2019 school year. That s nearly four times as much as what a student would typically spend to attend an in-state public college, according to data from U.S. News & World Report. No wonder recent graduates of private nonprofit schools typically shoulder about $32,600 in student debt, according to Matt Carter of Credible.
ANALYSIS/OPINION:
There is a new chief in town. How fortunate Fairfax County is to have Kevin Davis as its new police chief. Chief Davis is an excellent choice. He is highly experienced in the law-enforcement and public-safety arenas and is a well-educated, street-savvy, bright professional with keen insight into people and situations.
He is well-versed in community engagement. In his previous position in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where I had the pleasure and privilege to professionally interact with him, he was on top of his game in reaching out to the community, establishing positive relationships and making noteworthy impact on police-community relations. He was always approachable, amenable to conversation, a good listener and astute in critical thinking and strategic analysis.
Marymount University’s commencement weekend is underway and is back to being an in-person event.
The university held last year’s ceremony virtually due to the pandemic. This year’s commencement will feature a trio of notable speakers: former Virginia Department of Education Secretary James Dyke Jr. on Friday, Black Entertainment Television co-founder Sheila Johnson on Saturday, and former Washington Post publisher Don Graham on Sunday.
Undergraduate and graduate students will be grouped by their college at the university for the first time as part of the proceedings, which are taking place on the athletic field at the university’s main campus near Washington Golf and Country Club.
Loyola Maryland, other Catholic colleges will require COVID-19 vaccinations in fall
May 13, 2021
WASHINGTON (CNS) As Catholic colleges grapple with how to reopen in the fall, many, including Loyola Maryland University and Mount St. Mary’s University, are already saying they will require their students to be vaccinated for COVID-19 and some schools also are mandating that staff and faculty members be vaccinated.
“Our goal is simple and twofold: to provide a COVID-safe environment in which our students, faculty and staff can pursue our mission; and to help protect the health and safety of our off-campus neighbors,” said Jesuit Father Joseph McShane, president of Fordham University, in an April 16 letter to the college community explaining that all students need to be vaccinated –“with some considerations for medical and religious exemptions” by the start of the fall semester.
