12/30/2020 | Pines Officials Highlight Upcoming Drainage Efforts

BERLIN – As recent rains have highlighted drainage issues in Ocean Pines, officials are assuring residents improvements are being planned. General Manger John Viola told concerned residents during December’s Ocean Pines Association (OPA) board meeting that improvements, notably work at Bainbridge Pond, would be done in 2021. “For the Bainbridge area, that whole area all around the pond, it’s definitely going to help it,” Viola said. “They’re doing work with the pond that will have a big plus to that area.” Following Viola’s mention of the 5.7 inches of rain OPA Public Works staff measured on Dec. 5, a resident asked the board what impact the Bainbridge project would have for people like his sister-in-law, who lived on Burr Hill Drive.

12/23/2020 | Grant Sought For Shoreline Restoration Project

BERLIN – A grant could help with the restoration of the Jenkins Point shoreline. The Maryland Coastal Bays Program (MCBP) has applied to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for funding to aid in the Jenkins Point shoreline restoration. Jenkins Point Peninsula, located just south of the Route 90 bridge, has fragmented and eroded dramatically in the last 50 years. “What we’ve proposed to do is really re-establish the Jenkins Point Peninsula with its shoreline, its marsh basically restore the habitat that used to exist there,” said Kevin Smith, executive director of the Maryland Coastal Bays Program. The MCBP approached Ocean Pines Association officials earlier this year regarding plans to pursue grant funding to help improve the Jenkins Point shoreline. At this month’s meeting of the association’s board, officials said no residents had commented on the proposal and the board president was expected to sign an affidavit in support of the project.

On Dec. 11, State Senator Mary Beth Carozza hosted a roundtable discussion with special guests Simonaire and State Senator Doug Peters to hear about Worcester County’s challenges and priorities. “I thought this would be an outstanding opportunity for you to basically show off District 38, show off Ocean City and all of Worcester County,” she told local leaders last week. “This is our opportunity to shine.”
