Maryland Fifth-Graders Invited to Submit Arbor Day Posters for 2021 December 14, 2020 Annual Contest Taking Submissions until Jan. 15, 2021 Lola Lugard of Carroll County won first place honors for the 2020 Arbor Day Poster Contest. The theme for 2021 is: “Trees Are Terrific…and Forest Products are Too!” All entries must be delivered to a local Maryland Forest Service office by noon, Jan. 15, 2021. Students are encouraged to share their appreciation for Maryland’s forests and trees through original works of art. Poster size must be no smaller than 8.5 by 11 inches and no larger than 22 by 28 inches. They must be drawn in acrylic, crayon, ink, marker, paint pens, regular or colored pencil, tempera paint, or watercolor.

Deer hunters report successful firearms opening weekend The Maryland Department of Natural Resources says that hunters reported 11,054 deer taken on the opening weekend of the 2020 Maryland firearm season, Nov. 28-29. The harvest was 19 percent higher than last year’s official first weekend harvest of 9,272. The 2020 total includes 4,932 antlered and 5,799 antlerless white-tailed deer, and 163 antlered and 160 antlerless sika deer. In Frederick County, 492 antlered and 665 antlerless deer were taken opening day, Nov. 28; 153 antlered and 197 antlerless were harvested Nov. 29. the season closes Dec. 12. Muzzleloader deer season reopens Dec. 19 The muzzleloader deer hunting season in Maryland reopens Dec. 19 and runs through Jan. 2, 2021. This is the second half of the split season. Hunters face charges after illegal killing of albino deer Pete Thomas © Provided by For The Win Three Maryland hunters have been charged with the illegal hunting of deer, including an albino deer that was shot from the rear seat of a vehicle. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, after concluding its investigation, identified the suspects as Jeremy Hoalcraft, 18, of Oakland; David Georg, 29, of Swanton, and Jordan Dawson, 22, of Deer Park. The men are charged with killing multiple deer in Garrett County in November and early December. But at the center of the investigation was the shooting of an antlerless albino deer from a vehicle in a private field and leaving the carcass to waste.
