Allegany, Garrett counties lead state in COVID-19 cases, but omitted from first vaccine distribution

CUMBERLAND — Although Allegany and Garrett counties have the highest COVID-19 case rates across Maryland, local hospitals didn’t make the state’s cut for facilities that will get the first available vaccine for the disease. Whenever local hospitals do get a shipment, the vaccine won’t be mandatory for their workers. Vaccine distribution According to The Washington Post, the FDA early Friday said it “will rapidly work toward” authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine on an emergency basis, and that decision was expected by Saturday. The Maryland Hospital Association reported that 50,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine are set to be distributed to the state next week.

Two Dozen Maryland Hospitals Set to Receive Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccines

News4 has obtained a list of two dozen Maryland hospitals expected to receive the first shipment of Pfizer vaccines once it receives emergency authorization from the Food and Drug Administration. Some of the hospitals expected to receive an inaugural shipment of roughly 975 vaccines include Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Luminis Anne Arundel Medical Center, Holy Cross Hospital, Frederick Health and Meritus Medical Center. (Full list below) The head of the Maryland Hospital Association confirmed to News4 that the group sent a list of the 24 hospitals to its members earlier this week.
