There were two developments this week relating to the prosecution of four ex-Minneapolis Police Officers in the death of George Floyd.
First, Minnesota State Court Judge Cahill postponed the trial of the three remaining officers because of the federal indictment last week of those same officers for violating Floyd’s federal civil rights. The three Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas Lane were set to have their state court trial take place in August, but Judge Cahill postponed the trial until March 2022 in order to let the federal case proceed first, and also to put some time and distance between the controversial trial of Chauvin and the trial of the other three former police officers.

Lawyers representing former Minneapolispolice officer Tou Thao argued in a new court filing late Wednesday that the medical examiner who performed the autopsy on George Floyd was coerced by a prominent doctor in Washington, D.C., into altering its findings – and that prosecutors were aware.
The filing accuses that same doctor, who threatened to write a damaging op-ed in the Washington Post against the medical examiner, of later targeting the key medical witness called by the defense in the trial for Derek Chauvin, resulting in an investigation by the state of Maryland following his testimony. That has caused a chilling effect, Thao s defense attorneys argue, making it difficult for the defense to find other medical experts to testify for fear of losing their licenses or damaging their reputation.

As Americans are about to discover, the contemptible appetite for mob justice will extend beyond a defendant being tried for a crime.
Despite former police officer Derek Chauvinâs conviction, the mob has turned its attention toward Dr. David Fowler, an internationally renowned forensic pathologist who served as the state of Marylandâs chief medical examiner from 2002 to 2019.
Why? Because Fowler offered his services as an expert witness for the defense, and he had the âtemerityâ to offer a somewhat differing opinion on the cause of George Floydâs death than that of other experts. Fowler testified that the primary cause of Floydâs death was a sudden heart rhythm disturbance occurring while he was restrained by police precipitated by an underlying heart disease. He also testified that the fentanyl and methamphetamine in Floydâs system, along with possible carbon monoxide poisoning from auto exhaust, were contributing factors.
