Campaigners hailed a victory for Glaswegian solidarity and told the Home Office “you messed with the wrong city” as two men detained by UK Immigration Enforcement were released back into their community after a day of protest. Police Scotland intervened to free the men after a tense day-long standoff between immigration officials and hundreds of local residents, who surrounded their van in a residential street on the southside of Glasgow to stop.

The Scottish Conservatives have said the case for independence is weaker than ever while on the campaign trail.
The think tank also said it was not clear what the country s fiscal position would be in that scenario.
The SNP s Kate Forbes, the finance secretary, said independence would give Scotland more control over its economy.
According to the IfG report, the budget deficit of an independent Scotland would probably be larger than the 7.7% of GDP figure reported in 2018-19 due to the Covid pandemic.

THE Scottish Greens have condemned dawn raids in Glasgow in which refugee families have been taken from their homes and placed in detention centres.
Last week, a 67-year-old asylum-seeker was rushed to hospital by ambulance after collapsing in the home he shares with his family.
Early on Friday, his home was raided by Home Office immigration officials, who warned that they plan to return.
Green candidates in next week’s Holyrood elections visited the Maryhill Integration Network today to raise concerns about the Home Office’s treatment of refugees and asylum-seekers in Glasgow.
Party co-leader Patrick Harvie said: “The act of forcing people out of their home and incarcerating them at a detention facility is bad enough, but to do so during the pandemic is utterly inexcusable.”
