WEST FARGO A police officer suffered a medical emergency at West Fargo City Hall late this morning and later died, Police Chief Denis Otterness said during a press conference, Tuesday, May 18.
City staff called the media to West Fargo City Hall just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Otterness along with Sheriff Jesse Jahner, West Fargo Police Chief Dan Fuller and Mayor Bernie Dardis spoke to the media shortly before 3 p.m.

WEST FARGO West Fargo police have identified the officer who died Tuesday afternoon as Lt. Adam Gustafson.
Gustafson suffered a medical emergency at the police station and later died at a local hospital, the West Fargo Police Department said in a news release Wednesday, May 19.
He had been with the department for over 10 years.
“Lieutenant Gustafson will be remembered for his contagious smile and laughter, along with his dedication, teamwork and service to the City of West Fargo,” Police Chief Denis Otterness said in a statement. “Lieutenant Gustafson has made a lasting impact within our department and he will never be forgotten.”

WEST FARGO Lt. Adam Gustafson was working his regular shift Tuesday, May 18, but he hadn t been feeling well and decided it would be best to go home and rest.
The 40-year-old family man and 10-year veteran of the West Fargo Police Department never made it home. He suffered a medical emergency at the police station and was rushed to Sanford Emergency Medical Center where he later died.

West Fargo Police Lieutenant Adam Gustafson died on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 18, 2021, from complications from a medical emergency while at the police station. Fellow officers and West Fargo Firefighters rendered initial care until F-M Ambulance Service arrived and began advanced life support, including transporting him to Sanford Emergency Department. Lieutenant Gustafson later died in the hospital.
Lieutenant Gustafson has been a crucial part of the department for over 10 years. He worked his way up the ranks within the West Fargo Police Department and was most recently promoted to Lieutenant, serving in the Patrol Division, since 2018.
