The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (SRC) is reporting a “large explosion” occurred at La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent and the Grenadines on Tuesday night.
No more details are available at this time, but residents in St Vincent said they saw lots of lightning during the event.
The SRC said earlier in the day the volcano continues to erupt explosively and “accompanying ashfall, of similar or larger magnitude”, will continue to occur over the next few days.
The centre also explained why lightning was visible during explosions. Static electricity is built up in the ash column as the fine particle collide and when it is rapidly discharged, lightning occurs.

Pyroclastic flows headed down the eastern side of La Soufriѐre volcano in the Caribbean island nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Wednesday as an ongoing eruption continued to generate explosive activity, the country s National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) said.
Pyroclastic flows are scorching hot, ground-hugging flows of ash, debris and gases that typically hit temperatures of 390-1,300 F and speeds of more than 400 mph. These flows are capable of destroying nearly everything in their path.
On Wednesday, Richard Robertson from the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) warned anyone in the danger zone surrounding the volcano to evacuate immediately.

The volcanic eruption on the Caribbean island of St Vincent last Friday is quickly morphing into a humanitarian crisis as chronic water shortages develop, government spokesperson Sehon Marshall told local radio station Power 95.1 FM Grenada on Tuesday.
La Soufriere volcano has been erupting nearly every day - and sent ash columns into the air, as well as other volcanic material flowing down the mountain.
St Vincent s Central Water and Sewage Authority has been unable to extract water from its traditional sources since the last Friday s eruption, Marshall said, which has halved water reserves by 50%.
