Ryan seeks earmarks for Valley | News, Sports, Jobs

With the return of earmarks, also known as pork barrel spending, U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan is asking for money for projects for various Mahoning Valley organizations, including Mercy Health-Youngstown, Mahoning County High School, Gleaners Food Bank as well as road improvement work and bike trails. House Democrats announced they would bring back earmarks that were banned in 2011 when Republicans took control of the House. Before the ban, opponents said earmarks were abused and had little oversight. House Democrats changed the rules with the return of earmarks. Members had to make the projects public along with an explanation for each proposal, and the number of requests is restricted.

Pleased to see mass vaccine site in Valley | News, Sports, Jobs

Mar 12, 2021 We are pleased to know that Ohio officials realized the value of bringing a mass COVID-19 vaccination site to the Mahoning Valley. Word first came last week that the Youngstown area had been selected as one of 11 state-sponsored permanent vaccine sites, four mobile sites and two pop-up locations in addition to a state / federal site in Cleveland set to provide mass vaccinations against COVID-19 statewide. Each site is expected to administer between 300 and 3,000 vaccines per day, depending on things like supply and demand. The site is expected to open later this month, with specific dates and times when eligible people can get vaccinations made public prior to the opening. The local location will be managed by Mahoning County Public Health and the Youngstown City Health District with support from the Ohio Department of Health and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency.
