RPTA to host Virtual Professional Development Conference - Western Illinois University News

April 6, 2021 MACOMB, IL The Western Illinois University Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration (RPTA) will host its annual Professional Development Conference virtually from 8:30 a.m.-noon Friday, April 9. The Professional Development Conference provides opportunities for current students and prospective students to learn from alumni and industry leaders. It also serves as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the RPTA Departmental Awards recipients. The theme of this year s conference is Classrooms to Careers. Employment opportunities in the leisure industries are growing as the world is emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, many jobs look different now due to technological advancements and cultural changes wrought by the pandemic.

WIU senior teaching Virtual Science Saturday episode April 3 Office of University Relations, Western Illinois University MACOMB The Western Illinois University Department of Physics will host episode seven of its Virtual Science Saturday, Exploring Microwave Ovens: The History and Science, from 10-11 a.m. April 3. This episode will be taught by senior chemistry major and history minor Jesse Caverly, of Canton, IL. It will include information about the history behind the invention of microwave ovens, how chemistry and physics are involved and some interesting demonstrations. The presentation is designed for students in grades K-12 and for the general public. Caverly said he chose the presentation topic because he thought it was something people wouldn t typically think about.

Case Writers-in-Residence presented virtually April 8 Office of University Relations, Western Illinois University MACOMB The Western Illinois University Department of English will host the Fred Ewing Case and Lola Case Writers-in-Residence, in a virtual format, Thursday, April 8. This year s writers include Jennifer Militello, Crisosto Apache and Marianne Boruch. A question and answer session will be held over Zoom from 3-4 p.m. To obtain the link, email English Professor Erika Wurth at ET-Wurth@wiu.edu. A reading by the authors will be streamed through the WIU English department s Facebook page from 5-6 p.m. • Militello is the author of the poetry collection The Pack, and the memoir Knock Wood, winner of the Dzanc Nonfiction Prize, as well as four previous collections of poetry, including A Camouflage of Specimens and Garments, called positively bewitching by Publishers Weekly, and Body Thesaurus, named one of the best books of 2013 by Best American Poetry.
