The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on Monday a new proposal to slash “the production and importation of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)” by 85 per cent over the next 15 years, according to the New York Times. HFCs are a category of harmful greenhouse gases used in refrigeration and air conditioning.
Between 2022 and 2050, the EPA projects that their regulation will eliminate 4.7 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to about three years of emissions from the American power sector.
Scientists say reducing the use of HFCs will slow the pace of the planet’s warming by 0.6 C by 2050.

Germany’s top court ruled that the government must update its climate law by the end of next year to show how the country plans to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The case was initiated by young environmental activists, with the support of Greenpeace and other NGOs, who argued the government’s climate measures are insufficient to protect future generations.
The court ruled that it was unconstitutional for emission reduction targets to be postponed for so many years and found that the law was not detailed enough regarding the path toward achieving significant reductions.

“Over the last 20 years, we’ve seen that glaciers have lost about 267 gigatonnes per year. So, if we take that amount of water and we divide it up across the island of Ireland, that’s enough to cover all of Ireland in 3m of water each year,” Robert McNabb, a member of the research team that conducted the study, told BBC News.
Scientists have long warned that warming temperatures driven by climate change are impacting glaciers and ice sheets around the world, resulting in rising sea levels that threaten many of the the world’s coastal cities.
