Gretchen Whitmer over the Line 5 oil pipeline. Enbridge’s vice-president testified before the special committee examining the economic relationship between Canada and the U.S., and claimed that a collaborative approach will be necessary to keep Line 5 operational. “It’s very important for the Canadian governments to make the U.S. governments both state and federal understand that this is a very important bi-national issue that the energy security of both states in the U.S. Great Lakes region and Ontario and Quebec rely on,” Vern Yu, Enbridge’s executive vice-president and president for liquids pipelines, told committee members.

The Drilldown: Canada, Germany to work together on clean energy

iPolitics By iPolitics. Published on Mar 15, 2021 11:41am Pexels The Lead   Tomorrow, the federal government is set to sign a new agreement with Germany to strategize on a “clean-energy transition,” with hydrogen expected to be a key player the Globe and Mail reports. “Germany is probably the world’s most interesting market for hydrogen right now, and Canada is potentially a very big power in its production,” Sabine Sparwasser, Germany’s ambassador to Canada, said in an interview. However, some friction is expected as Natural Resources Minister Seamus O’Regan has been endorsing “blue” hydrogen, while Germany has been more interested in “green” hydrogen. The former hydrogen is produced from natural gas or other fossil fuels, while simultaneously “using carbon-capture technology to minimize emissions from the process.” In contrast, “green” hydrogen, is manufactured from non-fossil fuel sources.

The Drilldown: Tourmaline happy with oilpatch acquisition market

iPolitics By iPolitics. Published on Mar 12, 2021 11:38am (Gina Dittmer via Public Domain Pictures) The Lead The Canadian oilpatch acquisition market received a ringing endorsement on Thursday. Mike Rose, the CEO of Tourmaline Oil Corp., said there are still many potential acquisition targets in Western Canada but that may change if recently higher global oil prices continue to strengthen. Earlier this week, Tourmaline reported increased earnings and production over the last three months of 2020. Rose said the fourth-quarter boon has allowed the Calgary-based energy company to consider several possible acquisition deals. “I mean, if oil prices continue to run and solidify then perhaps that pipeline of opportunities slows down but right now we’re always busy evaluating and we only transact on very small proportion of the things we look at,” Rose said during a conference call to discuss fourth-quarter results.
