According to the Washington Post, U.S. President Joe Biden is poised to impose a moratorium on fossil-fuel leases on federal land and water. The policy is expected to be implemented tomorrow and would immediately halt all oil and gas auctions.
“By pausing the broken leasing system and halting the giveaways to oil and gas executives, President Biden has an opportunity to meaningfully fix the leasing system for the first time in nearly four decades, with solutions that work for the public and which incorporate ambitious conservation, taxpayer fairness, and climate goals,” said Jenny Rowland-Shea, a senior policy analyst for public lands at the Center for American Progress.

The results of a climate change poll developed by Oxford University and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) were released today. The survey was distributed on phone game applications like Angry Birds, which expanded its demographic reach by allowing for more younger people to submit responses. In total, more than 1.2 million people from 50 countries participated, making it largest survey ever conducted on climate change, according to the Globe and Mail.
The survey found that close to 70 per cent of people under 18 believe climate change is a global emergency versus 58 per cent of those over 60.

U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration plans to release more policies it believes are needed to tackle climate change as early as Jan. 27. According to Reuters, the policies are believed to include an omnibus order to elevate the issue domestically, including by declaring climate change a national security priority.
“We’ve already sent signals on the things that we don’t like that we’re going to roll back, but this week you’re going to see us move forward with what’s the vision of the future,” said Gina McCarthy, the White House’s national climate adviser.
Dreams of Canada being an “energy superpower” have been dashed because of political leaders who place virtue signalling about climate above our national interests and the welfare of Canadians. Canada’s oil and gas industry received another in a series of devastating blows this week when, as one of his first orders of business after being sworn in as U.S. president on Wednesday, Joe Biden issued an order revoking the permit for the Keystone XL.
