International Midwives Day: New parents in Cumbria thank NHS staff

New mums have been celebrating International Midwives Day by thanking their midwives for their care and support as they gave birth during the pandemic. Emma Penrice, of Workington, said: “Myself, and my other half, Jonathan Williams, would like to thank all the midwives and the team who helped bring baby Rory Williams into the world on April 17 at the West Cumberland Hospital. “For the majority of my care, I saw midwife Sarah Hargreaves, both in the community and on the labour ward. It was lovely to have a familiar face helping me through especially at the end when I felt all my energy was depleted.

Today, midwives at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust are celebrating International Day of the Midwife. Over the last year the midwives have shown great commitment, strength and resilience and continue to adapt to the ever-changing needs of the maternity service because of Covid-19. Between March 16 last year and the same date this year, maternity services at the Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital delivered 2,689 babies – 1,347 boys and 1,341 girls and 39 sets of twins. Rachel Fulton, matron of Midwifery Services at NCIC, said: “We have received some amazing feedback from women who were fearful of having a baby in a pandemic.

Man taken to hospital after serious crash

Police have confirmed a man has been taken to hospital after a serious crash in Whitehaven. Officers were called just before 9.30am to a two vehicle crash on Yewbarrow Close near Bethshan Nursing Home. Roads in the area were closed while emergency services were at the scene dealing with the crash between a van and a car. A spokesman for the police said: A man in his sixties from Ulverston has been taken to the West Cumberland Hospital with injuries not believed to be life changing. The crash involved a Vauxhall Vivaro and a Ford Fiesta. Road closures were in place between the junctions of Meadow Road and Woodhouse Road while emergency services were on scene.

Family donate memory boxes to support children who lose a sibling Dylan and Ebony Rigg A family has donated memory boxes to the West Cumberland Hospital to support children who have lost a sibling. Kathryn and Joe Rigg, of Beckermet, made the donation to the midwifery unit following the loss of their daughter Mollie Hannah in January 2020. Kathryn said: “When we lost Mollie we worried about how to support our children Dylan and Ebony –  a lot of the time children’s grief is forgotten about. “Another bereaved family sent Dylan and Ebony a sibling box, created by charity Naya’s Wish, in memory Mollie for Christmas.
