Online Exam Proctoring Catches Cheaters, Raises Concerns
Many administrators and faculty members say online exam proctoring works and is vital to expanding online programs. But some question, at what cost?

As the number of online courses and degree programs greatly expanded during the past decade, so did the number of exams administered online. Tens of thousands of online exams now are taken each month by students enrolled in online courses 30,000 exams a month at Western Governors University alone as well as by a growing number of learners in face-to-face classes.
At the same time, the number of for-profit online exam proctoring services has ballooned as colleges and universities seek effective, cost-efficient ways of catching cheaters.

An academic journal is giving potential veto power over submitted papers to “groups concerned by the findings,” following outrage over a published paper that concluded male mentors are better for female scientists.
Nature Communications revised its internal guidelines last week to consider “the dimension of potential harm” that a paper can inflict on concerned groups.
It also announced that the three authors – two of whom are female – had retracted the mentorship paper because its “conclusions in their current form do not stand.”

A local man was offered the job as Pequot Lakes’ next city administrator.
Richard Spiczka, Pequot Lakes Community Education director for the past four years, hadn’t officially accepted the offer as of Tuesday, Nov. 3, according to City Clerk/Treasurer Angie Duus, who said in an email that negotiations were taking place.
The council unanimously agreed to offer the job to Spiczka at a starting annual wage of $73,028 in a meeting Thursday morning, Oct. 29, Duus said.
Spiczka is also the Pequot Lakes High School boys basketball coach.

This is the story of how I prepared for a decade to graduate in 3 months.
In 2012, I dropped out of college, where I was studying computer science, after just one semester. I already knew how to program and I thought I’d never need a degree.
Over the years, I found myself complaining a lot about it. I saw many opportunities, especially abroad, that were out of reach because I didn’t have the required papers. I felt ready for graduate school but couldn’t get admitted. I had to work harder to prove myself to employers. Although I never noticed any serious gap in my knowledge, I felt that something was missing. I started to resent my decision.
