A Western Cape-based social worker has come up with a clever way to motivate Durbanville community members to eradicate dumpsites from their spaces – by turning them into vegetable gardens.
University of the Western Cape social work researcher Dr Rissa Niyobuhungiro is conducting research to establish whether “beautifying” areas that usually gather piles of rubbish unabated will lead to long-lasting change.

The SA Air Force’s (SAAF’s) Western Cape-based 22 Squadron, with pair of Oryx medium-transport rotorcraft, contributed in no small measure, alongside other disaster management elements, to bringing raging fires in the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) and adjacent areas under control in spite of bad weather conditions.
Working on Fire (WOF) helicopters were first to be dispatched to combat the fire that started on the mountain on 18 April and was spread by strong winds. These aircraft were forced to land by prevailing strong winds and low cloud which severely limited visibility.

Hawks puncture roadworthy certificate syndicate

CAPE TOWN - The Hawks have clamped down on a syndicate involved in issuing fraudulent vehicle roadworthy certificates and arrested a further two suspects.
In a statement released on Friday, Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani said the two suspects, aged 43 and 44, were traced and arrested earlier this week for fraud and corruption.

Jabaar is the second Nigerian player to sign for Stellenbosch this season as he joins his countryman Stanley Dimgba at the Western Cape-based club.
Dimgba was snapped up by Stellies from Nigerian giants Enyimba at the beginning of the current campaign and he has made an impact under coach Steve Barker.
The left-footed marksman, who is one of the most powerful shooters in the PSL, has netted three goals from six starts in the league.
