Nearly a year after three deadly accidents took place on West University Avenue, the city of Gainesville is working with UF and the Florida Department of Transportation to address traffic safety near campus. Efforts include decreased speed limits, license plate readers, LED message boards, increased police patrols, signal retiming and crosswalk enhancements.
Following a recent speed study by the Florida Department of Transportation, the speed limit on West University Avenue has been lowered from 30 mph to 25 mph.
The speed limit reduction is on the road just east of Northwest 21st Terrace to Northwest 13th Street.
This is the latest traffic safety measure on West University Avenue in recent months, which has also included signal retiming, crosswalk enhancements and the installation of temporary speed tables along the roadway.
The City of Gainesville and FDOT began the improvements following pedestrian fatalities on or near the road in late 2020 and earlier this year.
FDOT officials expect to begin additional enhancements next month with upgraded pedestrian signals at multiple locations on West University Avenue. The department continues to work with the University of Florida, City of Gainesville and local law enforcement agencies to develop additional safety improvements on West University Avenue.
LCG made that request in a memorandum filed in 15th Judicial District Court last month.
The memo says in May 1980, then-UDC chairwoman Betty Dugal admitted in group meeting minutes that her group knew it had no legal standing to challenge the city’s decision to move the Mouton Statue from the old city hall at the intersection of Lee Avenue and Jefferson Street to the current city hall at the corner of West University Avenue and St. Landry Street. According to those minutes, the group admitted to seeking a 10-day injunction to stop the move. That 10-day time frame covered the end of Mayor Kenny Bowen’s term in office and the start of Mayor Dud Lastrapes’s term.
