Supreme Court sets up National Task Force to assess oxygen distribution in country amid COVID-19 surge

Representative Image ANI | Updated: May 08, 2021 18:42 IST New Delhi [India], May 8 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Saturday set up a National Task Force for an effective and transparent mechanism for allocating medical oxygen in view of a surge in COVID-19 cases in the second wave of pandemic. A Supreme Court bench, headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud, constituted National Task Force (NTF) to assess and recommend the need and distribution of oxygen in the country. The Union Government shall continue with the present practice of making allocations of oxygen (as modified by the orders of this Court or the orders of the High Courts as the case may be) until the Task Force has submitted its recommendation in regard to the proposed modalities , the apex court said in its order.

The panel will provide inputs, based on members scientific and specialised knowledge, to meet others challenges to have been raised by the pandemic. The Secretary of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is among the 12 members while the Convenor of the National Task Force will be the Cabinet Secretary to the Centre. Other members include leading doctors from Delhi hospitals, Vellore s Christian Medical College, Bengaluru s Narayana Healthcare and Mumbai s Fortis Hospital. Here s the list of 12-panel members:  1. India is battling a second wave of Covid infections that has triggered an oxygen crisis (File) New Delhi: A 12-member National Task Force has been set up by the Supreme Court to assess availability and distribution of medical oxygen - on scientific, rational and equitable basis - across the country. The task force will also suggest measures to ensure availability of medicines needed to treat COVID-19. Setting up of the task force had been ordered by the top court on Friday, when it called for a revamp of the centre s allocation of oxygen to different states. At the time the centre had agreed and wanted an audit to be performed, but the Delhi government had opposed it.
