Residents vie for school board positions

A number of candidates seeking to fill roles on school boards across Bedford County submitted nomination petitions this week. The deadline to submit petitions to appear on ballots for the May 18 primary election was on Tuesday. Bedford Area There are six candidates seeking four seats on the Bedford Area School District school board. In Area I, which covers a portion of Bedford Borough, Manns Choice, a portion of Bedford Township and Harrison Township, William Ross will seek re-election and appear on both ballots. There is one seat open in the area. In Area II, which includes a portion of Bedford Borough, a portion of Bedford Township and Snake Spring Township, C. Peder Flaaen is seeking re-election on the Republican ballot, while Jerry Bagley of Bedford filed petitions on both ballots. There is one seat open.

EverettLorenzo “Junior” N. Ritchey Jr., 88, of Ritchey Road, Everett, passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2021, at Colonial Courtyard at Bedford. He was born on August 30, 1932; a son of the late Lorenzo “Cap” and Nellie M. (Stayer) Ritchey. On May 15, 1952, in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, he was united in marriage to Vivian M. (Imes) Ritchey. She preceded him in death on July 31, 2015. He is survived by a son, Todd L. Ritchey, married to Lisa (Ferguson), Everett; two grandchildren; Drew L. Ritchey and Taylor J. Ritchey; sisters Florence Mock and Alene Prye; numerous nieces and nephews and his special companion, his dog “Tootsie”. He was preceded in death by siblings Clemma Redinger, Marshal K. “Bud” Ritchey, Edith Clark, Louise Clark, Doris Foor, S. JoAnn King and infant siblings William and Ruth Ritchey.

The following defendants had charges bound to the Court of Common Pleas on Wednesday: William S. Fortune, 33, of Everett, on Dec. 1 was charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Tpr. William Green testified Fortune was found in possession of prescription pill bottles containing suspected drug residue, methadone and marijuana seeds during an incident Jan. 2, 2020, at his former home in Londonderry Township. Green said Fortune had been evicted from the residence the morning of Jan. 2, 2020, after a court order was filed against him by the property owner, Shannon Hyatt. Troopers were dispatched to the home about 6:30 p.m. that evening after Hyatt reported she found drug paraphernalia in Fortune’s bedroom. Green said Fortune’s ID card was found in the room along with various prescription pill bottles with his name on the label. Chief Public Defender Karen Hickey argued that several hours had passed from the time Fortune was evicted from the
