SACRAMENTO, Calif. The Johnson & Johnson COVID-19vaccine was reauthorized for use again in the U.S. on April 23, after an 11-day pause following rare blood clots in a handful of patients.
Health officials at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ultimately decided the benefits of the only authorized single-dose shot outweighed its risks.
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – San Diego County is resuming vaccinations with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after the California Department of Public Health gave the green light to do so over the weekend.
Vaccinations with Johnson & Johnson were temporarily paused earlier this month while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration studied adverse reactions in a small number of recipients.
The FDA concluded April 23 that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh its risks and approved it for emergency use. Following the subsequent findings of the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup, CDPH approved the vaccine’s usage.
Women under the age of 50 should be aware of the rare but increased risk of blood clots after vaccination with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and talk to their medical providers about other options if they have concerns about the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Service Agency.
Oregon now has second highest rate of infection
Oregon is now second in the nation for new COVID-19 infections, after months of keeping its levels lower than most other states, and its hospitalization rates in several counties are close to triggering a renewed ban on indoor dining and other high-risk activities, Gov. Kate Brown has announced.
At a press conference on Friday, Brown warned, “In the race between vaccines and variants, right now the variants have the upper hand.”
She said several counties are “on the verge of having to reinstate extreme risk restrictions on businesses and activities.” As of Friday, however, Yamhill County, which is in the high risk category, was not among them.

Most Contra Costa County Libraries to Reopen This Week
Most libraries in Contra Costa County will be reopening this week for indoor service.
Twenty-two sites are slated to reopen on April 26 and 27 under COVID safety protocols. Occupancy will be limited, masks will be required and guests are asked to minimize their visits to less than an hour.
“One thing that people have mentioned to us that they miss the most is being able to come in and just browse for books,” Brooke Converse said, public information officer of the Contra Costa County Library system.
Aside from the ability to browse and pick up books on-hold, computers and printers will also be available for public use, at a socially distanced capacity.
