BBC News Published image captionAndy Street visited the site on Monday Nearly 1,000 jobs have been pledged as a joint venture is agreed to deliver Birmingham s Curzon Street Station development for HS2. The £570m deal was signed between construction firms Mace and Dragados. Andy Street, the West Midlands newly re-elected mayor, said the project would deliver hundreds if not nearly a thousand jobs for local people. HS2 Ltd also revealed plans for the station to be net-zero carbon once open incorporating eco-friendly designs. These include 2,800 m2 (30,000 sq feet) of solar panels on canopies covering platforms and rainwater capture. Mr Street, who was re-elected as the region s Conservative mayor on Saturday, said jobs would initially be focussed in design, for instance architects and surveyors, before we actually get to people constructing the site on the ground .

Ballots have been counted at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham all day - with the Tories snatching victory for the second time running in the West Midlands Mayoral contest. Street won the first and only election to become the West Midlands Combined Authority Mayor in 2017 - by the narrowest of margins - winning by less than one percentage point. This year s battle was expected to be close-fought between the Conservatives and Labour, but after a day of defeats on Friday, victory for Andy Street today seemed almost inevitable. The Tories had already achieved massive success across the Black Country - with the party already winning enough seats to take overall control of Dudley Council.

Tory Andy Street increases margin over Labour to remain West Midlands mayor

Conservative Andy Street comfortably secured four more years as mayor of the West Midlands, winning 54% of the vote after first and second preference votes were counted. The former John Lewis managing director, whose re-election campaign was backed by comedian Jasper Carrott, became the inaugural mayor of the West Midlands when the post was created in 2017. Mr Street said he was delighted to have received even stronger backing than his 50.4% vote share four years ago. Although the contest went to a second preference count, Labour’s Liam Byrne was unable to make up a 55,309-vote deficit from the first round, trailing Mr Street’s total vote of 314,669 with 267,626 first and second preferences.
